Each one soaks up some water and lets it go slowly, while the spaces between them stay full of air. Because they're inorganic, they never break down, smell or go sour, which is exactly what you want at the bottom of a closed glass terrarium or in a pot without drainage holes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow to use\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eAs a drainage layer:\u003c\/strong\u003e put a layer a few centimetres deep in the bottom of a terrarium or a pot without holes, then add a sheet of mesh or a little moss to stop soil washing down. Feed with a fertiliser made for hydroponic or semi-hydro growing.
