Christmas Wreath Making Workshops

Our Christmas wreath making workshops return this winter, at The Garden on Mill Street in Dublin 8, Howth Castle Cookery School and Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara.

A wreath you have made yourself looks different on the door. You know where every sprig went, and which berries took three goes to sit right.

Every winter Mark Grehan runs our wreath workshops: an evening in our shop on Mill Street in Dublin 8 and gatherings at two castles, Howth and Ballynahinch. You arrive with cold hands and a bare wire base, and you leave with a Christmas wreath of your own.

01 · The workshop

What Happens at a Wreath Making Workshop

Mark begins at the table, showing how a wreath is built: the wire base first, then the foliage in small overlapping bunches, then the berries, cones and dried flowers that give it its character. After that it is your turn. You work at your own pace, choosing what goes where, with Mark guiding you step by step. All materials are provided.

At Mill Street it is an evening, from 6.30pm to 8pm, with a glass of Prosecco and mince pies. At Howth Castle Cookery School and Ballynahinch Castle it is a six-hour day, from 10.15am at Howth and 11am at Ballynahinch: coffee and pastries, a walk through the grounds to gather ferns, berries and branches, then lunch before the wreath making.

02 · Take it home

A Wreath for Your Own Front Door

At the end you carry it home, still smelling of pine and eucalyptus. Hang it on your front door and it will greet everyone who calls through the festive season, or bring it inside, over the mantelpiece or on the dining table, where you will see it every evening.

It is yours in a way a bought wreath never quite is. Every time you open the door, you will remember the evening you made it.

03 · Together, or as a gift

A Wreath Workshop for Two, or as a Christmas Gift

It is one of the nicest things to do together in December. Bring a friend, your mother, your partner or your sister, take two places side by side, and make a wreath each: one for your door and one for theirs.

A place at the workshop also makes a thoughtful Christmas present, especially for someone who already has everything: an evening out, something learned, and a wreath on their door by the end of it. And if you would rather give your wreath away than keep it, one made with your own hands is a gift that is hard to match.
