For orchids whose old mix has broken down into a dense, damp mush, and for any mix that needs more air around thick roots. This is orchid bark, steam-treated to keep it clean, in a medium 12–15mm size that suits most orchid pots and works well blended into an aroid mix. 3L resealable bag.
Orchids grow on trees, not in soil, with their roots out in the air and the rain. Chunky bark gives them something close to that in a pot: pieces that hold a little moisture, dry between waterings and leave plenty of room for air. This bark is steamed to help prevent mould and rot, and it breaks down slowly, holding its shape for several years. It holds less water than coconut husk chips, so plants that like to dry out a little between waterings do better in bark.
Which plants it suits
Phalaenopsis and other epiphytic orchids, bromeliads and hoyas. Blended into soil, it suits Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium and other aroids with thick roots that want air. How to use
- For orchids: use it on its own, or with a little sphagnum moss for more moisture. Soak the bark in water for a few hours before potting so it's evenly damp.
- For aroids: stir roughly one part bark into three parts potting soil to open the mix up.
- As a top layer: a thin layer over the soil helps the surface dry out between waterings.
- Bark that has been damp and sealed in the bag can grow mould. If you're storing an opened bag for long, spread the bark out to dry for a few days first.
